Freddie Mercury
20 years ago today, Freddie Mercury died of complications from AIDS at his home in London’s Holland Park at the age of 45. During his career with Queen, he recorded over 40 Top 40 UK singles and was a major influence on rock showmanship and the “rock star” ethos, with their live shows still being considered some of the best in history to this day.
After Mercury’s death, the remaining members of Queen arranged what the Guinness Book of Records regards as the largest rock star benefit concert in history: The Freddie Mercury Tribute. 1.2 billion people tuned in to watch the event on April 20, 1992.
